Written and directed by Charlie Chaplin, Gold Rush is the third silent movie I have ever seen, and it was a delightful display of comedy amongst tribulations.
This silent film begins with the harshness of winter during the Alaskan gold rush. Three unlikely men discover the same beat up shack to wait out a snow storm: a small tramp (Charlie Chaplin), a burly mountain man (Mack Swain), and a wanted killer (Tom Murray). After some quarrels and suffering, the men part ways. Charlie meets the woman of his desire, Georgia, in a local tavern. The film's comedy continues in pursuit of Georgia and the possibility of striking it rich.
My friend Mel and I watched this film on Netflix last week one afternoon, and we laughed together through the whole film adding our own personal commentary. I chose this film because even after 88 years, this film still holds strong on AFI's top 100 films of all time. It is clever, intriguing, and absolutely adorable in it's use of dramatic expression and music. One of the most difficult parts about viewing this film is there are some slow scenes while you are waiting for the plot to develop.
I would definitely recommend this film, especially if someone has never experienced a silent movie. Everyone should experience the Roll Dance. It is a classic. I was literally rolling out of my seat!
