Gangster Squad, Log #1

What a better movie to start with than a current box office hit? Directed by Ruben Fleischer, this film loosely depicts the take down of Jewish Mafia gangster, Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), by an undercover Gangster Squad in Los Angeles.

Assigned covertly by his chief (Nick Nolte), Sergeant John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) forms a six pack of misfits to take down Mickey Cohen by destroying his illegal operations across the city from sex trafficking to drug cartel. There is the inside man Sergeant Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), sharp shooter Officer Max Kennard (Robert Patrick), determined for justice Officer Coleman Harris (Anthony Mackie), technical mastermind Officer Conway Keeler (Giovanni Ribisi), and the afterthought addition Officer Navidad Ramirez (Michael Pena).

The plot thickens as Mickey Cohen begins to hunt down the cops, and punish their families. Will justice be served to the city of Los Angeles?

Gangster Squad was the first film I have ever watched in theaters solo, and it was well worth the trip this past Saturday afternoon in Little Rock, AR. The majority of my friends will only make the trip to the theater for a decent chick flick, but ever since I saw the Gangster Squad trailer my curiosity bubbled within.

My favorite part of the film was the display of Sergeant John O'Mara's sacrifice for justice. By the final boxing match, I was drawn into his emotions to see Mickey Cohen put behind bars. I also thought the effects and the music were fantastic. However, I feel like this film could have been developed to follow the true events of the life of Mickey Cohen better.

Although no comparison to the Godfather, I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a classy gangster film. So if you are craving a night out, why not go to the movies?
